India 1959

In 1953, my grandfather made the first of two returns to the land of his birth. He gave talks at meetings of the Photographic Society of Pakistan in Karachi ('Pictorial Composition' and 'Colourful Moments') as well as to other meetings arranged in Rawalpindi, Lahore and Dacca in Pakistan and, in India in Bombay, Ahmedabad, Delhi and Calcutta.

A brief review of this photo-journey appeared in the Photography Journal Section A of August 1953 (page 251).

These pictures were taken on his second visit in 1959, which lasted 6 months. During the first 4 months he undertook no photography because he had taken all his photographic materials with him and did not want to open them for use until all could be used in a short space of time.

He made extensive use of his Hasselblad camera on this trip, and the interchangeable backs allowed both colour and BW pictures to be taken.
